Legislative Agenda

OEWI's Legislative Goals

  • Align our education system to the needs of Oklahoma's current and future workforce
  • Encourage increased connection between business and the classroom
  • Ensure valid assessment of college and career readiness
  • Attract, retain and promote outstanding teachers and administrators in schools
  • Place an emphasis on giving students the foundation they need for academic success
  • Protect and improve the variety of educational choices given to Oklahoma students and parents
  • Protect existing reforms and support their full implementation
  • Promote innovation in education

2017 Legislative Agenda

  • Ensure the Reading Sufficiency Act is not repealed as a part of the current anti-testing sentiment
  • Utilize OEWI's report on the best practices in A-F accountability metrics to change Oklahoma's system to align to the best in the country
  • Provide input and guidance into the legislation outlining assessment, accountability and graduation requirement changes (up or down vote, 30 calendar days from Feb. 6)
  • Support the passage of policies that promote school choice, in order to give students free market choice when selecting the school that best meets their individual needs
  • Create an earnings report to be distributed to students outlining the state's most in-demand jobs, the education required for each job and its earning potential
  • Support the creation of a high-quality career diploma that requires either an industry certification or associate's degree in hand to graduate

Long-term Policy

  • Propose a differentiated pay plan for teachers that helps fill high-need areas like D/F schools, STEM positions, etc.
  • Create an Innovation Fund for education to foster outside the box thinking and creative ideas
  • Study the data related to the parent committees in the Reading Sufficiency Act to determine if it is working, or serving as a loophole around the law
  • Create an online portal to help better connect business with education needs
  • Advocate for funding formula reform, including equalized funding for all public schools including charters
  • Incentivize businesses to offer internships, apprenticeships, teacher externships
  • Expand competency-based and quality digital learning offerings statewide
  • Support increased and improved STEM education at all grade levels and encourage STEM community participation statewide
